(what was formerly known as a dichotomy of comply/surpass), 2010

Free movement; a structure or object that impedes free movement. Such free movement can thrive in the presence of a physical obstacle, a social/moral structure, a legal (but thus also social-moral) system or a private mental hinder. As with all restrictive systems, these continuously and equally grant all performers within an individual free choice of walking either of two paths: comply or surpass

Looking into some of the mental barriers it becomes clear that some are legal, others are religious or moral. All of which are ego/fear driven self-sustained social, “group” barriers feeding off an individual need of belonging to a group/clan/ family/etc. Also including faux-spiritual/philosophical barriers. In “actual” spiritual/philosophical barriers, there seems to be a clear self-sustained, “private” barriers which does not feed off the ego, but off an individual struggle for enlightenment.

The barrier-elements presented herein are all ex-barriers—removed, illicit or otherwise, from the scene in which they can thrive. Outside of this scene they are without their restrictive power but stands as placeholders for a critical discussion concerning these barrier-elements and their effects on their respective scenes.

Rogue barriers—physical, ethereal, movable, fixed, all-encompassing, specific, spiritual, philosophical, intuitional and language-based all at once. The terms ‘hijacking’ and ‘hacking’ comes to mind, not in their concrete application but as an allegory, or even as a shadow-hand. To tap into and redirect an existing power structure; to gain unauthorized and unrestricted access; seizing control of a vehicle by the use of force (creating a temporary alternative power-grid). These strategies are, when applied concretely, in most societies frowned upon and/or illegal. The indirect application of these strategies, however, lays in a legal, moral and religious grey zone—protected by their small scope, grey mist and wooden, horselike shape. The dichotomy of comply/surpass is a double edged knife which can be transformed to the dichotomy of comply/surpass only in the presence of a myriad of small, self-sustained and ever changing wooden horses.
